Preparation for Anesthesia

On the day of your surgery, if you are having intravenous sedation, there are some general guidelines and recommendations that need to be followed. Compliance with these points allow for a safer, more comfortable surgery. Clinical staff will discuss these with you on the phone prior to the surgery. We will also review them with you on the day of your surgery.

Don't have anything to eat or drink for 6 hours prior to your surgery.
No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. If you could reduce your smoking or quit entirely, that would be fantastic.
You will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult to the appointment. He or she will remain in the office during the surgery, and then will safely drive you home.
You should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours after having anesthesia.
Please wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures will be removed at the time of surgery.
Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
If you are feeling ill on the day of your appointment, such as a cold, sore throat, or GI problems, please notify the office. We will likely post-pone the surgery to a time when you are feeling well.
If you take routine oral medications, you will likely take these with a small amount of water the morning of surgery. However, this will be reviewed beforehand as there are some exceptions.
